SScentDecoder

YSL batch code decoder

Enter the short manufacturing mark from your YSL bottle or box. The checker supports the six-character L’Oréal Luxe format used from 2011 onward and the older four-digit Coty format, while keeping repeating-year ambiguity visible.

01

Start with the right number on the package

Fragrance packaging contains several identifiers, and the longest or most prominent one is not necessarily the batch code. A retail barcode identifies a product configuration for sale. Ingredient and distributor text serve regulatory and supply-chain purposes. The manufacturing code is usually a smaller cluster of letters and numbers, often printed, etched, stamped, or embossed on the carton or the base of the bottle.

Before typing, photograph the mark at the highest useful resolution. Try a second angle if metallic print or glass glare hides a character. Preserve spaces only when they are visibly part of the code and keep leading zeros. Confusing O with zero or I with one is common, and a checker cannot correct that uncertainty without risking a fabricated answer.

02

The two supported YSL production eras

For bottles manufactured from 2011 onward, the supported L’Oréal Luxe format uses six characters: a factory letter, a repeating year digit, a two-digit ISO production week, and two site or control characters. The checker converts the week into an approximate calendar month and shows the week number in the result.

For pre-2011 bottles, the supported Coty format uses four digits: a repeating year digit followed by a three-digit day of year. Inputs outside those formats return Unknown rather than being forced into the wrong production era.

03

How confidence labels change the meaning of a result

High means a standard format and multiple recorded sources support the specific output without a remaining calendar ambiguity. Estimated means the visible format matches but the date requires a judgment, such as selecting among repeating decade cycles. Unknown means no approved rule or format match is available. The label appears beside the result so uncertainty is not buried in a footnote.

A confidence label is about decoding strength only. It is not a rating of the seller, the condition of the fragrance, or the authenticity of the bottle. Those questions require different evidence. A batch code cannot prove authenticity, even when it fits a known structure and produces a reasonable date.

04

Documenting YSL bottles in a collection

Create a simple record with the fragrance name, concentration, volume, purchase date, seller, and photographs of the bottle and carton bases. Add the code exactly as observed and note any character that remains uncertain. If you later re-check the code, record the new result rather than replacing the original note. That history can reveal whether a rule changed or a transcription was corrected.

Separate observable facts from interpretations. “Code appears as A0B1 on bottle base” is an observation. “Bottle was produced in a particular month” is an interpretation that should carry a source and confidence level. Keeping those categories apart makes a fragrance catalog more useful, especially when items are gifted, sold, insured, or evaluated years later.

05

Production date is not the same as fragrance condition

A perfume can be recently produced and poorly stored, or older and carefully preserved. Heat, direct sunlight, repeated temperature changes, air exposure, and the stability of a formula all influence how a fragrance ages. The batch date offers historical context but cannot measure what happened to the bottle after it left production.

Store fragrance upright in a cool, stable, dark place and keep the closure secure. If you notice changes in color, odor, or performance, consider the storage and opening history rather than assuming the printed date provides the whole explanation. ScentDecoder does not test the liquid, establish shelf life, or provide a safety determination.

06

Checking a secondhand YSL purchase

Ask for clear photographs of the exact bottle, carton, base markings, and any receipt before buying. Keep the listing and seller messages. If a code is visible, use it as one limited data point. A plausible production estimate cannot overcome missing provenance, inconsistent photographs, or an implausible seller story, and an Unknown result does not prove wrongdoing.

When the price or rarity makes the decision important, use a reputable seller with a meaningful return policy and consider an independent in-person evaluation. Online batch tools are convenient, but authenticity work depends on materials, construction, provenance, and comparison details that a four-character input cannot capture.

07

What to save after running the checker

Save a screenshot or note containing the exact input, the confidence label, the explanatory sentence, and the check date. Keep it with the original code photographs. If the result is Unknown, do not discard it; that is the accurate outcome for the present evidence, and it may be worth revisiting after the rule library is expanded.

Use the result for organization, research, and storage planning—not as a certificate. ScentDecoder is independent and makes a narrow promise: it will estimate a production date only when its source record supports doing so, and it will state when the answer is ambiguous or unavailable.

YSL batch code FAQ

Which YSL batch-code formats are supported?

The checker supports the six-character L’Oréal Luxe format used from 2011 onward and the four-digit Coty day-of-year format used before 2011. Other inputs return Unknown.

Where should I look for a YSL batch code?

Inspect the bottom panel of the carton and the base of the bottle for a short printed, etched, stamped, or embossed character group. Do not use the long retail barcode.

Does a matching YSL code prove authenticity?

No. A batch code can be copied and cannot prove authenticity. Use provenance, seller protections, full-item inspection, and expert help when the decision matters.

Is an Unknown result evidence that the bottle is fake?

No. Unknown only means the checker lacks a reliable rule or the input does not match a supported format. It is not an authenticity conclusion.
